Monsoon Season

It poured a torrential storm the day we decided to head to Wheeler's Yard for a mini-photoshoot, which made it impossible for us to take photos at the iconic blue wall, or even within the cafe, because the doors were closed and the lighting was dismal. It was unfortunate that on the one day we had time to meet up, it was monsoon season, and the rain did not let up all day. Still, we made do with what we had, and produced this set of photos. It was my first time doing a shoot with Minyi, in my 7/8 years of knowing her, and it was great fun. Nothing beats a whole afternoon spent with friends, despite the gloomy weather. Wheeler's Yard was filled with bicycles, enough to make a non-cyclist like me go wide-eyed, and the food, while nothing much to write home about, was pretty standard and satisfied my cravings for brunch and dessert.

The wild child necklace was a gift from the sister, who turned a glitzy heart-shaped pendant into a wearable necklace for me. I thought it contrasted nicely with the good girl style of my outfit. It must be my second time wearing this top and skirt in a post already, which goes to how how much I like them both, since I hardly repeat my clothes in photos. While the weather is getting much too unbearably hot (yet, with sudden downpours) for me to be going around school clad in a knee-length heavy skirt, at least this outfit kept me warm during monsoon season.

White Out

(necklace, Lovisa / sweater, MissyPixie / shorts, Runway Bandits / bracelet, Accessorize / silver rings, Colette Hayman / bag, Bangkok)

White is a colour I generally shy away from, because of the impracticality on it. But on days when I decide I am brave enough to chance it, I go all out. White top, white shorts, white shoes, white everything, with a nude bag thrown in to make things more interesting. I bought this white quilted pullover the moment I saw it, just because, and then I had to match it with this pair of quilted white shorts in a slightly different texture. My sister described the shorts as waffle-d instead of quilted, but it was interesting to do the texture-play. My shoes are a very old pair bought at least five years ago, and they come with hand-painted designs and floral shoelaces, a remnant of my style from many years back. Accessories were kept minimal and according to the theme, all white and frosty: a chunky white rose ring, silver bands, a simple bracelet, and a very shiny necklace

Brunch at Lola's Cafe did not disappoint, as usual, and right now I find myself craving their truffle fries and Avocado Eggs Benedict with an intensity. Desserts at Mad Hatter's Cafe did not quite sit well with me- the cheesecake reminded me of mooncake, and the brownie was crumbly and dry instead of moist and dense, though kudos for presentation. Perhaps the best of the lot was the chocolate tart.
Oh, and Happy Chinese New Year! I hope you all gorged yourselves silly on pineapple tarts and goodies and had a well-deserved rest.

"Can we do frivolous things in December? Completely absolutely hundred percent-ly frivolous," said one of my friends over text. And so we did. We walked around aimlessly in town for a short while, decided it was time for some good chocolate truffle cake, and then went down to Holland Village to check out Sunday Folks, because, apparently, that's what all the cool kids are doing these days, and you aren't anybody if you haven't had Sunday Folks yet. I am pleased to announce that I have officially tried Sunday Folks, after weeks of staring at mouthwatering photos on my Instagram newsfeed. The Earl Grey Lavender did not really cut it for me (I'm more of a traditional chocolate person) but my friends declared it absolutely delicious. I'm a bit of a wimp when it comes to trying new flavours.

On our particularly frivolous date, I was somehow dressed in the exact opposite of the word: a boyish plaid shirt, nondescript black shorts, simple pendants and sleek leather boots (my only indulgence in this outfit, really). Even my rings were plain silver bands, free from embellishment; just about everything in this outfit is clean cut and androgynous, and it brings me back a little to the days when I was a tomboy and refused to go near skirts. Also, what's interesting about this shirt is that it's cropped- effectively reducing the bulky and awkward amounts of fabric to be tucked in shorts or a skirt, but also eliminating the possibility of wearing it as an outerwear. Oh well- you win some, you lose some.

Old School

(top, Dressabelle / shorts, The Tinsel Rack / parka, WildChild / shoes, Topshop / bag, Emoda / necklace, WoodenBox / watch, Nakedglory / arrow cuff, Claire's / gold spiral rings, Colette Hayman, triangle midi ring, Lovisa)

I can't think of anything better than a day spent dressed up, satisfying my tastebuds with brunch and dessert, and chatting with good company. This particular day saw me at Dakota (thank you Steph for travelling down just to spend time with me), at a quaint little neighbourhood called Dakota Crescent, complete with white brick buildings, two-storey shophouses and an adorable playground. It does sound picturesque, doesn't it? There were so many different photo opportunities, and I'll be sad to see this little neighbourhood go during its redevelopment. Perhaps I'll make another trip down again, just for the sake of more photos. Brunch consisted of the typical Big Breakfast, nothing fancy, but just enough to satisfy my craving for scrambled eggs. I thought the Ugly Nutella was pretty good, and since I'm not a fan of cheesecake, I cannot comment on the Rainbow Cheesecake, which technically made its way onto our table simply because it looked like it would be good for the photos (that, and Steph likes cheesecake).

Anyway, this has got to be my favourite outfit for a long time, I can't say how excited I was to put it on and shoot somewhere that did not include the area behind my residential hall in school (the same ol' buildings get boring after a while). What's not to love? A structured, weave-printed top that reminded me of tweed, sand-coloured knee-length culottes, black leather moccasins, all topped off with a military green parka? I'm sold. Not to mention the numerous accessories I crowded onto my hands, and the gorgeous vintage watch I got from Nakedglory/The Tinsel Rack, with its beautiful sapphire face and gold numbering. I would be be-spelled, if I were you.

Honestly, this set of photos makes me miss the carefree days of the holidays with an intensity. School has only been around for 4 weeks, and already I find myself down with an insidious flu/sore throat/fever mishmash of illnesses that has been plaguing me the whole week and shows no signs of letting up. Stay healthy, y'all!

Sweater Weather

(sweater, Bangkok / skorts, HerJetSet / bag, Bangkok / shoes, Vans / bracelets, Bangkok / tribal rings, triangle midi ring, Lovisa, crown midi ring, Claire's / necklace, Topshop
(photos by Harriet)

It seems a little ridiculous that Singapore could actually be sweater weather, but with a bit of tolerance for the heat, along with the occasional chilly day, sweaters can do wonders with your outfits. I like this sweater for so many reasons: it's lightweight, which means less gritted teeth when the weather starts getting hotter, it has comfy batwing sleeves, and sleeves are not full-length, which is great because I hate having to push my sleeves up and create bulky chunks of fabric along my arms. It's also got this interesting metallic sheen to it. I paired it with a pair of floral skorts and a tribal necklace I borrowed from the sister's collection, just for extra detail. All this effort just for a simple shopping trip to Bugis, I know. Anyway, the mother, sister, and I tried out Tai-Parfait, simply because it looked too good to resist (fish-shaped cakes stuffed with filling and topped with ice cream? I was sold) but I cannot say that I'll be back there again, for the high prices these sweet treats commandeer. Sadly, my strawberry dropped off after I took my photos because the ice cream melted way too fast (again, my priorities...) and the chocolate filling was way too much for one person to handle.

How have you all been? I just collected the bracelet I bought from Azensg at the Christmas Markets Flea sometime back in December, and I'm completely in love with it; it was money well spent indeed. And honestly this coming week doesn't look too good for me, what with two presentations coming up, but fingers crossed that I get through it successfully!
